(Green Web Hosting continued from above...)
The only standard for ensuring a data center is Green isn't a standard at all. Instead it is a measurement called Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). PUE is calculated on a scale roughly between 0 and 4.0 with 0 being the best (and also unobtainable). Data centers that score around 1.5 and less are considered efficient. Those that score between 2.5 and 1.5 are considered average. Anything more means the datacenter is inefficient.
The score itself gauges exactly how much power is going to the actual servers and how much of it is being "wasted" on cooling, switches, and the like. However the problem behind this metric lies in the fact that even though a good score shows that maximum energy goes to the servers, it does not tell you if those servers are running at capacity. Therefore, PUE shows what is possible, it does not show you the reality.
In the end, when finding a Green Host you should look at how efficient they are: do they use alternative energy sources, and do they also use carbon credits or some form of offset.
