SingleOs is the developer of several cloud computing platforms including Fuscan LBC (Load-Balanced Cluster), VDC (Virtual Data Center), and EHA (Enterprise Hosting Automation). With his business partner Stoyan Marinov (CTO of SingleOS), Dimitar has been showing Web Hosts how best to harness the power of cloud computing. In our interview with Dimitar, he talks about cloud computing, Fuscan, and the future of web hosting.

Note: Since this was a very lengthy interview it has been divided. The following is the second part of the interview.

How did you come up with the name Fuscan, i.e. what does it mean?

It doesn't meaning anything! I have asked my partner Stoyan could he come up with a name of the technology and he said "Fuscan". I didn't like with because it sounded to me like a name of a hardware product. I still don't like the name :) but the technology behind became a very good product. So I said to Stoyan I was fine with the name. We should be putting it in a focus group, something I always do, but I had a feeling that it would be a lucky name.

How long did it take to develop Fuscan?

We got a stable version after a 12 months of development and 2 months of testing the cloud product. But its development is a process. We are working on integrating a number of 3rd party application on our cloud platform in order to make it even more useful. All the major Linux based CMS - Drupal, Joomla, MODx, Typo3, TextPattern, WordPress, etc work on top of Fuscan without any issues.

At the end of 2007, you had decided to research the different approaches to virtualization, what fueled that decision?

Virtualization is the key to cloud computing, because it standardizes the hardware infrastructure, and consumers dont need to deal with different hardware configurations. Most virtualization technologies also allow live migration of running instances across servers, so hardware maintenance doesnt mean service downtime anymore. Virtualization also enables service providers to automate the provisioning and deployment of cloud instances and enables resource flexibility.

If you had limitless resources, how would you improve cloud computing?

I would put more money in research and development. Web hosting industry is a relatively small, despite that it generates a significant value. So it is very important to constantly improving the technologies you posses.

How can Web developers and businesses leverage Cloud hosting to better their web sites?

It is about the costs of doing business. Once they find out that they would save thousands of dollars on hardware and software licenses on the cloud, they will begin migrating. Of course there are many other reasons for developers to adopt cloud hosting. Scalability and high availability are among them.

Cloud.bg uses Fuscan for their Cloud hosting platform (on top of Red Hat Cluster, of course), was that a decision from the start? Was Fuscan first designed for Cloud.bg and then offered as a separate solution for other hosts or was Fuscan designed as a separate entity from the beginning?

Cloud.bg is a cloud hosting provider. It was launched because there is a growing demand of cloud hosting services in Europe. I have played a part in its launch, however this a separate company, a client of SingleOS LLC (the company behind Fuscan LBC) we signed at the end of 2009. Fuscan has debuted during the HostingCon 2009 as one of the Silver Sponsors of the conference.

Cloud.bg is the first web hosting service to office cPanel in the cloud. cPanel is a very familiar face in the Unix/Linux hosting market, does that familiarity help when it comes to getting customers to use the cloud?

Well, Cloud.bg was the first web host to bring cPanel on the cloud because it was the first hosting provider to deploy Fuscan Linux Cloud. I would be happy to get any of the large providers or data center solutions, shared or dedicated hosting as first client. However the market leaders need more time to implement new technologies. They are more conservative. So we decided to focus on signing middle-sized hosting providers. It is easy for them to make decisions.

How important is the use of cPanel with your hosting plans?

It is important because they are the best web hosting automation provider on the market. But this is not the only reason we define them as important. I will be very honest with you and I will share what I think about them. They are accessible, open-minded and friendly as company. It is a style of leadership. You know, I'm glad that we abandoned our plans to create our own hosting automation panel for the cloud and decided to integrate cPanel/WHM on our cloud platform.

If you could summarize Cloud.bg in ten words, what would they be?

A Shared Cloud hosting service based on the Fuscan LBC!

Though based in Bulgaria, will Cloud.bg expand to other markets and locations around the world at a later date?

Who knows? Cloud.bg have begun signing international customers. They will definitely grow a lot in Europe within the next few months. I'm saying "They" because I'm about to exit this company and to focus on the process of producing cloud hosting automation software. However it will become more difficult for them to compete other bigger clients of Single OS who are working to deploy Fuscan LBC.
